  "Called into special session to deal with a budget deficit estimated between $337 million and $550 million, the Democrats in the Legislature managed to trim state spending by a feeble $12.4 million. It is a repeat of the same pattern we have seen time and again this year: Regrettably, it is an outright refusal to admit that state spending has far exceeded the ability of state taxpayers – any state taxpayers – to pay for it."

  Connecticut will receive $391,270 in federal stimulus funds to develop a data system in support of the state’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children – better known as the WIC Program.

  The pilot program is open to companies established here or that have operations in the state, have fewer than 500 employees and have ongoing business and sales derived from Connecticut-based activities. Participating companies must match the grants.

  Gov. Rell today announced that state employees collected more than four tons of non-perishable food and contributed $28,348 in cash donations – more than twice last year’s cash total – to benefit Foodshare and the Connecticut Food Bank.

  Members of the 250th Engineer Company are expected to arrive at Camp Rell, Niantic at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, and members of the 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry are expected to arrive at the William A. O’Neill Armory in Hartford at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23.

  "The state prison population is currently about 18,300, down from nearly 19,900 in February 2008. While other states – including states facing even more severe budget problems than our own – are being forced to build new prisons, we can make the most of our successes by building on these achievements."
