A Note From Ashley

Hi my name is Ashley. I知 a ten year old girl. I知 very outgoing. I love to play lacrosse and dance. I do other things too, like swim, baseball, run and love to play Spy. I want to work for the CIA when I grow up. I like going to school to see my friends. Math and science are my favorite subjects.

I知 in the fourth grade this year. I work real hard in school to do well, but sometimes it is hard for me to do. You see, I have type 1 diabetes. I have had diabetes for almost 8 years now. My pancreas doesn稚 make insulin to break down the sugars in my body.

When I was little I had to take 4 shots a day. For the last 3 years I have had a pump. That is a lot nicer. I check my blood sugar 8 times a day, right before I eat anything and when I want to do some type of sports. My mom checks me every night to make sure I知 ok. You see if my sugar is too high or too low things can happen to me that are not fun.

Your blood sugar should be 90 to 120. Mine goes all over the place. If I知 70 or under I start to shake, can稚 see right, feel very tired and feel like I知 going to pass out. If I pass out I could go into a comma. If my sugars are high I get sick. I also get tired a lot and could go into a comma.

When I grow older I could have problems with me eyes, heart, kidneys, feet and having a family of my own. Diabetes is no fun, but I知 not going to let it stop me from being me. I know in my heart that one day I will not have to worry about what I eat and what I do. With all the doctors and God on my side trying to find a cure I will come out a winner.
