The organizers of The Sandy Hook 5K are proud to announce the second annual race to honor the memories of the victims and support those affected by the tragic events of December 14, 2012 in Newtown/Sandy Hook. The race will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2014 on the campus of Fairfield Hills in Newtown beginning at 8:15 a.m. Nearly 1,200 adults and 125 children will be participating in the race in Newtown; more than 100 others will participate virtually in their own communities.
The Sandy Hook Run for the Families held on March 23, 2013, was a 5K Run/Fitness Walk hosted by the Hartford Marathon Foundation. Approximately 15,000 runners and walkers took to the streets of Hartford and virtually in their own communities to show support for Newtown, raising more than $438,000 for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.
On March 29, The Sandy Hook 5K (please note name change) will once again be held, this time in the town the event works to benefit. The on-site event will be held starting at 8:15 a.m. on the campus of Fairfield Hills in Newtown and will feature a 5K run/fitness walk, as well as a fun run for children ages 2-11. The press is invited to attend.
“The response to last year’s event was so overwhelming,” said Race Director Katie Blake who is returning to organize the 2014 event. “We wanted to make sure the meaning behind this event continued on so that the running community could continue to show its support for Newtown. The Sandy Hook 5k is not about running. It is about life: honoring the memory of precious lives lost through tragedy and celebrating the gift of life. It is about uniting in hope for the future.”
This year's theme for The Sandy Hook 5K is Love Runs Through.  Love runs through everything being done to prepare for this event, and through every step we take to reach our goals.  Our goal is to offer a world-class, one-of-a-kind family event filled with love. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female runners. Additional awards will be presented to the top runners in each of the following age categories: 8 and under, 9-12 years, 13-15 years, 16-19 years, 20-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years, 50-59 years,60-69 years, 70 and over.
