 Welcome to GIS Day 2011!
Connecticut GIS Council
In Connecticut, GIS Day is celebrated during Geography Awareness Week during the third week of November. It was first established by a 1987 joint resolution of Congress<about://gis/lib/gis/Joint_Resolution_of_Congress_Establishing_Geography_Awareness_Week.docx>. The week has been continuously celebrated ever since.. To read Governor Malloy's Proclamation, please select:

The purpose of GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week is to draw attention to what geography is, why it is important, and how geospatial technology and real-world applications are making a difference in society.

Although celebrations, events, and activities are encouraged in all communities, schools, and organizations, the largest Geography Awareness Week celebrations have been conducted primarily through the National Geographic programs. Geography Awareness Week occurs simultaneously with International Education Week led by the US Department of Education and the US Department of State.
