Notice to Fixed Gear Fishermen

Towed Side Scan Sonar and Magnetometer Activity near Stamford, Bridgeport and New London

 
A survey to determine the locations of documented and reported historic shipwrecks is planned for April, May and June in discrete near shore waters near Stamford, Bridgeport and New London using towed side scan sonar and marine magnetometers.

 
The survey schedule is as follows:
New London Areas April 18 through April 29, 2016;
Bridgeport Areas April 25 through May 6, 2016;
Stamford Areas May 16 through May 27, 2016 AND May 23 through June 3, 2016.

To avoid entanglement, fishermen fishing fixed gear (e.g. lobster and whelk pots) are urged to remove gear in the areas indicated during the periods identified above.

This work will be performed from two small University of Rhode Island Research Vessels, a 30 foot pontoon style vessel (grey with blue canvas bimini) and R/V Shanna Rose, a 42 foot Wesmac (blue hull with white superstructure).  Please contact URI Graduate School of Oceanography Professor Dr. John King at 401.874.6182 if you have any questions concerning this activity.
