DEEP: Notice to Commercial Summer Flounder Fishermen

Notice to Commercial Summer Flounder Fishermen

December 12, 2012

Trip Limit Change

Effective 0001 hours, Thursday, December 13, 2012 the Connecticut possession limit for the commercial harvest of summer flounder increased to 500 pounds.

The Department estimates that less than 97% of the annual commercial summer flounder quota allocated to Connecticut for 2012 had been landed. State regulations allow for a possession limit of 500 lbs until 97% of the quota is reported landed in Connecticut. After careful review and verification of the seafood dealer submitted landing reports for summer flounder, we have detected some summer flounder that was reported as landed in Connecticut but was actually landed in another state. We have determined that the total amount of summer flounder landed in Connecticut is below the 97% landing trigger.

The Department monitors landings and adjusts trip limits according to Department regulations in an attempt to provide fishing opportunity throughout the year for all participants in the commercial fishery. In addition, the Department strives to provide advance notification of trip limit changes, although this may not always be possible due to rapidly escalating or unanticipated landings. In such circumstances, only a short notification period may be possible.
