DEEP: Quota Managed Species Meeting Notice

Quota Managed Species Meeting Notice

November 30, 2012

A meeting of seafood dealers and commercial fishermen holding quota managed species endorsement letters has been scheduled for 2:00 pm Monday December 10, 2012 at Marine Headquarters, Boating Education Center (rear building). The purpose of this meeting is to receive input on strategies to manage the 2013 commercial quotas for summer flounder, scup, black sea bass, and bluefish to share access equitably among endorsement letter holders by season, optimize economic returns, and to prevent fishery closures that could lead to discarding fish. No major shifts in management strategy with significant allocation implications will be considered at this meeting. Such actions require full regulatory amendments or statutory changes.

At their August 15, 2012 joint meeting the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission agreed on coastwide commercial quota levels to recommend to NOAA Fisheries following the requirements of the federal fishery management plans for these species. Connecticut’s share of these proposed quota levels for 2013 are as follows: scup summer period (May-Oct) 288,980 lb (342,819 lb in 2012), summer flounder is 258,000 lb (287,320 lb in 2012), black sea bass is 17,800 lb (17,100 lb in 2012) and bluefish is 118,488 lb (130,649 lb in 2012). All amounts are provisional, contingent on NOAA publication of final specifications and any adjustments for state quota overages.
