DEEP: Public Meeting Notice

Public Meeting Notice

The Department has scheduled Public Meetings to receive comment on alternatives to manage the 2012 recreational harvest limits for black sea bass, scup, summer flounder, and tautog. In addition, public comment will be taken on the 2012 Enhanced Shore Angler Opportunity Program and the Striped Bass Bonus Fishery Program.

Black sea bass, scup, summer flounder, and tautog are all managed cooperatively through the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and specific alternatives are subject to Commission review and approval. Some species may be managed on a regional basis, others at the state level pending decisions made at the Commission’s winter meeting in Alexandria, VA on February 8th.

Healthy black sea bass, scup and summer flounder stocks (all are at or above biomass targets) present expanded fishing opportunities this year. The tautog resource is considered to be experiencing overfishing, requiring a 53% reduction in harvest this year.

The Enhanced Shore Angler Opportunity and Striped Bass Bonus Fishery Programs are part of a broader Department effort to improve the quality of access to our Public Trust marine fisheries resources, especially in urban areas. Both programs rely on reduced size limit regulations to allow anglers young and old the opportunity to experience the joy and relaxation of outdoor recreation and the satisfaction of catching their own dinner. At the same time, the design of these programs assures that resource conservation objectives continue to be met.

Alternatives will be considered for the commercial fishery in concert with restrictions on the recreational fishery to satisfy the overall requirement to reduce exploitation on tautog by 53% in 2012.
