DEEP: ASMFC Lobster Management Area 6 Lobster Conservation Management Team Meeting

ASMFC Lobster Management Area 6
Lobster Conservation Management Team Meeting
Tuesday, December 6, 2011

November 22, 2011

On November 7, 2011 the ASMFC American Lobster Management Board approved Addendum XVII requiring a 10% reduction in exploitation effective January 1, 2013 for all Lobster Management Areas (LMA) in the southern New England (SNE) stock area. As discussed at our three Public Hearings on the Addendum, this reduction must come from a change in gauge size, closed season or a combination thereof and should be consistent throughout each Lobster Management Area. To assure consistency between New York and Connecticut waters in LMA 6, a meeting of the Area 6 Lobster Conservation Management Team has been scheduled for:

10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Tuesday, December 6, 2011
Connecticut DEEP Marine Headquarters
Boating Education Center
333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT

States are required to submit plans by December 24, 2011 for Technical Committee review. The Board will consider final approval of the plans at the Commission’s 2012 Winter Meeting in February.

In addition, the Board has initiated draft Addendum XIX to "scale the SNE fishery to the size of the SNE resource". Options in draft Addendum XIX are to include, but not be limited to, a reduction in traps actually fished by a minimum of 25%. The LCMT will also be asked to provide early input on this addendum.

As a reminder, Lobster Conservation Management Teams were created in 1997 under Amendment 3 of the ASMFC Lobster Management Plan to serve in an Advisory Panel capacity to the Board and to provide a mechanism to achieve consistency in management measures throughout each LMA. LMA 6 includes all of Long Island Sound and New York waters of Block Island Sound. LCMT 6 includes fishermen from both New York and Connecticut. All fishermen and interested members of the public are welcome to attend.
