Public Informational Meeting for Connecticut Lobstermen

December 2, 2010

The DEP Marine Fisheries Division is holding an informational meeting on lobster management. At the ASMFC Annual Meeting in November, the Lobster Board received the lobster landing projections from the Technical Committee to assist in weighing alternatives for achieving both a 50% and 75% reduction in harvest relative to the 2007-2009 landings. These reduction levels were identified for the draft plan addendum approved for development earlier this year. The proposed moratorium option has not been removed from consideration and addenda always include a "no action" alternative. Options being considered include, but are not limited to: closed seasons, closed areas, trap reductions, minimum and maximum gauge changes, restrictions on female lobster harvest (up to a male only fishery), and quotas.

The meeting will be held at:

7:00 PM, Tuesday, December 21, 2010
DEP Marine Headquarters Education Center
333 Ferry Road
Old Lyme, CT 06371

Take I-95 to Exit 70 to Route 156 south, turn right onto Ferry Road, follow to the end. The Education Center is located at the rear of the property.

There are no specific proposals at this time, but we are looking to get input on lobster management alternatives now that the data are in hand. The ASMFC timeline is unclear at this point, but we need to begin working as soon as possible to identify approaches that make the most sense from our state fishermen’s perspective. Other states will be doing the same before the Lobster Board gets back together again at the next full Commission meeting in March (or earlier if another special Board meeting is scheduled by the Commission similar to the July meeting in Warwick).
