DEEP: Meeting to Discuss 2009 Commercial Summer Flounder and Scup Quotas

Meeting to Discuss 2009 Commercial
Summer Flounder and Scup Quotas

November 14, 2008

The Marine Fisheries Division is hosting an informal meeting of summer flounder and scup endorsement letter holders and seafood dealers to discuss 2009 trip limits with regard to strategies to best manage Connecticut’s commercial allocations of these two species in the coming year.

As you may know, the summer flounder fishery in Connecticut has remained open into November this year. We fully expect that the remaining quota will be fully utilized before year’s end. We also anticipate the 2009 summer flounder quota will increase modestly - about 15% - in 2009.

Connecticut’s 2008 summer period scup fishery closed September 13th in response to a rapid pulse of landings that began as soon as the fishery reopened September 1st.  Despite this abrupt closure, cumulative landings exceeded the annual quota by some 30%. The 2009 coastwide allocation is expected to be similar to 2008 before any overage is deducted. We are currently working with other states in an attempt to mitigate this overage through quota transfers. Clearly, it will be important to discuss options for managing this quota in the coming year.

The meeting will be held at:
