Reminder: September Long Island Sound Trawl Survey Sites

Enclosed is a map showing the locations of the 40 CT DEP monthly trawl survey sites to be sampled during September from the research vessel John Dempsey.  Lines on the map give the direction and distance of each tow. For the exact start and end of each tow, please refer to the accompanying table using the reference number (Ref. No.) printed at one end of each tow.  The table has the reference number, LORAN TD coordinates at the start and end of each tow, trawl survey site number and simple description of the tow (for example: “East-West Tow”).  Latitude and Longitude are also supplied; however, they are approximate and should be used as a rough guide only.  Tows are conducted using LORAN TD’s.

On April 1, 2008 we mailed a packet with the complete list of sites selected for sampling in 2008, along with the monthly maps of the site locations.  This is a reminder that the September Trawl Survey is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2008.  Monthly Trawl Survey Maps (PDF 865KB)

We are providing this information in order to avoid accidental disturbance of your gear and to maintain the integrity of our survey so that we can continue to provide the best possible monitoring survey of the Sound’s fishery resources.  For this effort to be successful we need your cooperation by removing any gear you have within one-half micro second to either side of the survey line for the period between September 8 and September 30.  Provided gear is set in an orderly fashion, this space -- about 500 ft -- is an adequate width for towing the relatively small (46 ft sweep) net used in the survey.

Your cooperation in providing a clear path for sampling is greatly appreciated.  This survey continues to provide needed information for assessments of Long Island Sound fish and lobster resources.

The survey is expected to begin in the east and progress westward.  It generally takes 10-12 days of good weather to complete the survey.  You can reach R/V John Dempsey at 860-490-3275 or on VHF CH 16 + 13 any time the vessel is on the water.  The crew can tell you at any time during the survey period what sites have been completed and provide approximate dates when sites in a given area are to be sampled.  We hope this communication can minimize the amount of time your gear will have to be moved.

Again, we appreciate your cooperation.  Please contact David Simpson at the CT DEP Marine Fisheries Office in Old Lyme, CT if you have questions on the survey or the schedule for sampling in your area.
