DEEP: Notice to Commercial Fishermen Summer Flounder Possession Limit Change

Notice to Commercial Fishermen

Summer Flounder Possession Limit Change

July 26, 2006

Effective 0001 hours Tuesday, August 1, 2006 the Connecticut Trip Limit for the commercial harvest of summer flounder will be reduced to 100 pounds. No commercial license holder shall possess and no vessel shall land or have on board more than this amount while on Connecticut’s waters after this date.

State regulations require that the trip limit for summer flounder be reduced from 150 to 100 pounds when 31% of the state’s annual quota has been landed since May 1. The DEP monitors landings and has estimated that 31% of the state’s annual quota since May 1 will be landed by August 1. The DEP estimates that only 3% of Connecticut’s 314,649-pound annual summer flounder quota will remain after August 1. Once 100% of the annual quota has been landed, the commercial fishery possession limit will be reduced to zero pounds for the remainder of 2006.

The DEP adjusts trip limits according to state regulations in an attempt to provide fishing opportunity throughout the year for all participants in the commercial fishery. In addition, the Department strives to provide advance notification of trip limit changes. Unfortunately, since only 3% the state’s 2006 quota remains, the Department expects that the fishery will be closed for the year in the very near future.
