PI&E Meeting 4-21-09

PRESENT: Kathryn duPree, Leo Germain, Jennifer Lortie and Anita Tremarche

The APIE Committee had a teleconference on April 21, 2009. However, they did not have a quorum but members discuss the following items.

Ms. Taylor stepped down from being the chair and the committee appreciates her contributions that she made over the last few years. A new vice-chair is needed because Mr. Germain became the chair from being the vice-chair. This slot must be filled by a parent.

Ms. Langton reported the Special Education and Community Toolkits are done, assembled and are ready to get out to people. The committee discussed ways to distribute the toolkits. The target audience for the Special Education for Parents Toolkit can be (a) Board of Educations, (b) Special Education Directors, (c) Libraries, (d) Family Support Council and their families, (e) Head Start and (f) Birth to Three. Ways to distribute the Community Inclusion Toolkit can be (a) Chamber of Commerce, (b) Recreation Departments, (c) cable networks, (d) partner with other conferences or events and (e) Disability Advocacy Collaborative and their region groups. Ms Tremarche will talk to Ms. Davis about how to get these toolkits to the rural areas. Ms. Lortie will take some toolkits to the Assistive Technology Demo where she works. In addition, Mr. Germain will ask the Council Members to take some toolkits and to distribute them in the area. Ms. Langton and the committee will develop guidelines to give to the council members. Also, the committee will write a letter that will give overview of the toolkits.

Mr. Germain talked about the need for the committee to take an active role with writing letters to editors of various newspapers. He will ask Council Members to inform Ms. Langton about articles that are in their newspapers. Ms. Tremarche will develop a format that they can use by Members.

The APIE Committee suggested having teleconference calls on the third Wednesdays of each month. The next meeting will be on WEDNESDAY, MAY 20 from noon to 1 p.m.
