PI&E Meeting 9-3-09

          CT COUNCIL ON DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

ADVOCACY, PUBLIC INFORMATION AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE

PRESENT: Joyce Baker, Leo Germain, Jennifer Lortie, Nancy Taylor and Anita Tremarche

ABSENT: Steve Belske, Patricia Carrin and Kathryn du Pree

STAFF: Mary-Ann Langton and Ed Preneta

GUESTS: Two personal assistants

Mr. Germain called the Advocacy, Public Information and Education (APIE) Committee meeting to order on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 12:08 p.m. by welcoming everyone to the meeting. Mr. Germain asked for a motion for the minutes of July 30, 2009. Ms. Lortie made a motion to approve and Ms. Taylor seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

Mr. Germain led a discussion about whether or not to order additional toolkits. Ms. Langton said that the CT State Library is not able to assist with toolkits’ distribution with the various CT libraries. The State Library will take a set of toolkits for their reference.

Therefore, the committee infamously agreed not to order additional toolkits but to use the remainder of the toolkits. Ms. Langton will meet with Mary Harris from CT Public Broadcasting, Inc., to obtain the master copy of the toolkits. Then we can put the toolkits on CTCDD Website.

The committee reviewed and decided which of the Public Awareness, Information and Understanding Initiatives to recommend at the upcoming Council Meeting. The committee recommended the following initiatives:

Initiative 2 – Hold a Council’s 40th Anniversary in March 2011;

Initiative 4 – Create, Publish and Disseminate a guide to state services and supports;

Initiative 7 – Hold an Emergency Preparedness Conference; and

On behalf of the Council, Ms. Langton trained approximately 600 fire responders during the past two years. These trainings informed the participants in knowing how to assist individuals with disabilities during a disaster. In addition, she suggested that the proposed conference inform people with disabilities with knowing how to prepare for a disaster.

Initiative 8 - Explore television, radio and print productions with CT Public Broadcasting, Inc., that will further work of the Council.

Ms. Taylor suggested that the committee explore using free-lance writers or interns to meet this goal.

The next APIE meeting is on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Office of Protection and Advocacy, Hartford from 11 AM to 1 PM. Members can call in if they are unable to attend the meeting. This meeting has been postponed.

Respectfully Submitted,

Mary-Ann Langton
