CTCDD: PI&E Meeting 11-19-09

PI&E Meeting 11-19-09

PRESENT: Joyce Baker, Kathryn duPree, Leo Germain, Jennifer Lortie, Armand Legault, Maryann Lombardi, Dwayne Paul and Nancy Taylor.

ABSENT: Steve Belske and Zuleika Martinez

STAFF: Mary-Ann Langton

GUESTS: Two personal assistants

Mr. Germain called the Advocacy, Public Information and Education (APIE) Committee meeting to order on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 12:06 p.m. by welcoming everyone to the meeting. Everyone was introduced. Mr. Germain asked for a motion for the minutes of October 15, 2009. Mr. Paul made a motion to approve and Ms. Lortie seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

There was a lengthy discussion about the process the committee needs to select freelance writers and public relations. Some members recalled their work with CT Public Broadcasting Network formerly known as CT Public Television and the low viewers’ rate from various surveys regarding ‘Able Lives.’ The committee needs to rely upon freelance writers and/or Public Relations who can use their expertise in the following ways: blog, Face-book, letters to the editors, optional letters, making people see that the Council Members are the experts on disabilities issues, etc.

Mr. Legault, Chair of the Council, will ask Mr. Preneta to talk to the appropriate person in the state regarding this initiative, and to see whether approval to contract with freelance writers and/or public relations is possible before more time is spent on this. In addition, Mr. Preneta will tell the committee about choosing freelance writers and/or public relations.

Ms. Taylor asked Ms. Langton to send the members the DAS Website with names of freelance writers and public relations.

Mr. Germain and Ms. Langton reported that it is time to think about the 2009 Annual Report. The Governor wants all annual reports to be done ‘in house’ because of the state budget. Members who volunteered to be on the proof-readers task force are: Joyce, Jennifer, Leo and Armand. The content would be on the various 2009 initiatives and stories from council members concerning issues of people with disabilities’ everyday lives. Ms. Langton will draft a letter to ask Council Members to see if they would like to submit a story.

The next meeting would be Tuesday, December 1, 2009.

Members unanimously adjourned the meeting at 1 P.M., and wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary-Ann Langton
