Press Release

“Look, Listen, Learn.  Be aware. Fire can Happen Anywhere”

 is the

2018 Fire Prevention Week theme

The week of October 7 thru the 13th is National Fire Prevention Week.    Public Education Coordinator, Alan Zygmunt of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection and the Connecticut Fire Academy urges all Connecticut residents to follow the three steps to be more fire safe.  Zygmunt states, “The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week focuses on looking for fire hazards, listening and reacting to the smoke alarm and learning your family’s escape plan.”

The National Fire Protection Association has issued several important facts, they include:

Look for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.

Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Each year fire prevention week is held during the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire on October 9th of 1871.  The week has been recognized nationally every year since 1922.  Check with your local Fire Department to see what events are planned for your community.

The Connecticut Fire Academy is the teaching arm of the Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control.  Part of their mission is educating the public in fire and burn prevention.  For additional resources on Fire Safety for your family visit and click on the Public Education tab.
