Governor’s Summer STEM Challenge

We are excited to provide an opportunity for students to engage in fun, interactive, hands-on STEM activities – using only household materials!

Summer Stem Challenge
The Governor's Summer STEM Challenge

The Governor's Summer STEM Challenge is a statewide design competition for Connecticut students. The series of challenges will take place over 5 weeks and each challenge will provide an opportunity for students to engage in fun, interactive, hands-on STEM projects. Each weekly challenge will introduce students to virtual instruction with Yale student organizations and building projects with everyday materials.

Week 5 Challenge:

Group Challenge: Egg Drop Challenge

A classic design problem is to create a device to safely deliver an egg to the ground from a specified height.  This challenge presents that problem but requires only the use of natural materials to accomplish the goal.

Individual Challenge: Zipline Challenge

Ziplines are a fun way to get from a high place to a lower place, thanks to gravity. In this challenge, competitors create a zipline to transport a load while minimizing friction and maximizing the effect of gravity.
