Governor Rell: 20 Communities to Share

Nearly $500,000 in Stimulus Grants for Public Safety

Funds Help Local Governments Buy Equipment,

Upgrade Technology and Training

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that 20 cities and towns will share in nearly $500,000 in federal stimulus funds to support local crime prevention efforts and police services.

The grants range from $100,000 for the largest cities to $9,100 to the smaller, rural communities. All 169 municipalities are eligible for the funds, which are part of the $4 million Justice Assistance Grants (JAG), administered by the state Office of Policy and Management. The Governor said more than 40 communities have been awarded the money and is strongly encouraging those towns that have not applied to do so by the August 26 deadline.

“All across the state, the biggest cities and smallest towns have been putting these stimulus grants to good use for their specific public safety needs, whether it is buying a new cruiser, paying for overtime or updating technology,” Governor Rell said. “The funds allow local governments to bolster public safety without shifting the burden to local taxpayers. The deadline to apply is fast approaching and we do not want anyone to miss the opportunity to secure these much-needed funds.”

All the grants will be awarded by October 1, 2009.
