Governor Rell: Illegal Dumping at Several Sites

An ‘Attack on Our Environment’

Targeted by Covert Dumping of Hazardous Waste

Governor M. Jodi Rell today joined top state environmental officials and state police in Harwinton to tour one of several locations fouled by the illegal dumping of more than 60 barrels of hazardous waste.

“Our state is not a dumping ground and those with flagrant disregard of our environmental laws will be dealt with swiftly and surely,” Governor Rell said. “This was a loathsome, dangerous act that jeopardized the safety of others,” Governor Rell said. “This is not a case of lazy littering, but a covert, egregious attack on our environment. Those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“I commend state police and the Department of Environmental Protection for their quick response to this environmental emergency,” Governor Rell said. “I will not be satisfied until we are absolutely certain that these cowardly criminals are apprehended and prosecuted.”

The Governor said the barrels were dumped on private and state property over the weekend in Bristol, Burlington, Plymouth and Harwinton.
