Governor Rell: $4 Million in Stimulus Grants

To Bolster Local Crime Prevention Efforts

All 169 Municipalities Eligible for Grants

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that she has informed the top official in every city and town in the state that their community can apply for stimulus grants of up to $100,000 to support local crime prevention efforts and police services.

The Governor said the Connecticut Local Pass-Through Justice Assistance Grant program will distribute $4 million statewide. It is part of the $12 million the state received from the U.S. Department of Justice through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

“We want to ensure that every community – large and small, urban and rural – can get these funds at a time when local budgets and taxpayers are under enormous pressure,” Governor Rell said. “Communities have the flexibility to use these grants for services and public safety programs that best meet their specific needs.”

The Governor said the grants range from $9,100 for small towns to $100,000 for the state’s largest cities. These grants are in addition to the grants communities are receiving directly from the Justice Department.  The application process will begin next month and, in a letter to chief elected officials, the Governor explained that a representative must attend one of four workshops on documentation, transparency and deadline requirements mandated under the ARRA. Municipalities can begin receiving the grants as early as August 1.

The workshop dates and locations are:

·        June 8 – Norwich Senior Center, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

·        June 9 – Ansonia High School, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

·        June 10 – Rentschler Stadium, East Hartford, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

·        June 11 – Merritt Hall, Connecticut Valley Hospital, Middletown, 10 a.m. to Noon
