Governor Rell Announces Plan
To Preserve Funding for Local Bridge Program
Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced she has directed the Department of Transportation to immediately begin working with municipal leaders on a plan that would secure state funding for local bridge maintenance and repair.
The $28 million local bridge program has provided financial assistance to towns and cities since 1984, but because of the serious budget deficit the state is facing, the bridge program had been slated for possible suspension. Cities and towns use program funds for the construction and maintenance of bridges on municipally maintained roads.
“These are projects that are critical to public safety and absolutely must not be jeopardized,“ Governor Rell said. “The state has made commitments to these communities and I have taken steps to ensure local leaders that even in the face of the worst fiscal crisis in decades, we will work with them to fulfill those obligations and keep citizens safe.“
In a March 6 letter to mayors and first selectmen around the state, Governor Rell said that she is requiring DOT officials who administer the bridge program to work out a financial plan and schedule for funding with municipalities that meet their needs. The Governor cautioned local leaders, however, to “be mindful of the financial situation and uncertainty in which we all find ourselves.”
“Now, more than ever, we need to work together,” Governor Rell wrote. “I hope that I can count on your resourcefulness, cooperation, and practical approach toward fulfilling existing commitments under the Local Bridge Program.”
