Governor Rell: Armories to Remain Open
For Shelter Use Tonight
Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that the state will continue to use five National Guard armories as shelters tonight as potentially dangerous sub-zero weather grips the state.
“The coldest weather of the week is expected to settle in tonight and it is essential that no one be left out in the cold,” Governor Rell said. “We are monitoring shelter capacity around the state several times a day, and because we are learning that many are at or near capacity, the safest course of action is to keep these armories available for any overflow.”
The five armories are among 10 around the state that are certified by the Red Cross to be used as a shelters or warming centers. They will be open from 8 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. tomorrow.
The five armories are:
· Hartford Armory - 360 Broad Street
· New London - 249 Bayonet Street
· Waterbury - 64 Field Street
· Stratford - 63 Armory Road
· Branford - 87 Montowese Street
Governor Rell said the armories will be staffed by National Guard and the Red Cross. She said local police departments are helping to make transportation arrangements for anyone who needs to get to the shelters.
