Governor Rell Names Greenwich Executive

to State Board of Education

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced she has nominated Greenwich executive Linda McMahon to the 11-member state Board of Education, which establishes academic standards and sets policy for Connecticut’s 149 local and 17 regional school districts.

McMahon is Chief Executive Officer of the Stamford-based World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.  McMahon, who holds a bachelor’s degree in education from East Carolina University, formed WWE with her husband, Vince, the company’s Chairman.  Starting as a regional company in 1982, the McMahons transformed the WWE into a global leader in media and entertainment with annual revenues of nearly $500 million. Linda McMahon has been widely recognized as one of the entertainment industry’s top female executives.

“Linda clearly understands the skills and education needed to succeed in business and the type of highly educated and skilled workforce that must be available to ensure that success,” Governor Rell said. “I am confident that her leadership abilities, input and advocacy as a mother and grandmother will be key assets to the Board and its mission of ensuring quality education for all Connecticut children.”

The state Board of Education’s current five-year plan, “A Superior Education for Connecticut’s 21st Century Learners,” focuses on quality preschool, high standards for all students in reading, writing, math and science and high school reform.

Linda McMahon has also helped create literacy outreach programs, sits on the Board of Trustees for Sacred Heart University and is a member of several civic and community groups.

McMahon will serve for a term ending March 1, 2011, or until a successor has been appointed and has qualified, whichever is longer. The nomination is pending legislative approval.
