Breast Cancer Awareness Month Begins Today, Lt. Governor Rell Announces

HARTFORD – Today marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Connecticut and across the nation, Lt. Governor M. Jodi Rell reminded state residents today.

“For years, October has been the month of pink ribbons, in honor of those fighting breast cancer and in memory of those whose lives were lost to the disease,” Lt. Governor Rell said. “This year is no different – it’s the time of year to raise awareness and educate the public about breast cancer.”

Once again this year, at the request of Lt. Governor Rell, dozens of Connecticut municipalities are displaying wreaths decorated with pink ribbons as a visual reminder of the ongoing need for breast cancer education, prevention and early detection.

“Breast cancer continues to be one of the most widespread health risks facing women today. It has invaded the lives of too many of our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends,” Lt. Governor Rell said.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that one in eight women will develop the disease.  Approximately 2,000 women in Connecticut will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and nearly 500 will die from it.

All women are at risk for developing breast cancer.  More than 75 percent of all breast cancers are found in women 50 or older, and women in this age group are urged to get a mammogram and breast examination by a doctor or nurse every year.

“Women are in a fight – in most cases a fight for their lives – against breast cancer.  Each step we take to educate, to promote early detection and to promote mammograms will allow more women to win their fights,” said Lt. Governor Rell.
