Vested Deferred Retirement

In order to be eligible to collect a vested deferred retirement benefit from this system you must:

  • Have a minimum of 10 years of CT service (prior to age 60)

  • Leave the balances of your account on deposit with this system until you are eligible at age 60

  • File an Application for Retirement Benefits with this office

The first step is to determine whether you would have completed 20 years of Connecticut service by the time you attain the age of 60.

If by age 60 you would have been credited with 20 years of Connecticut service, the vested deferred benefit would be as follows:

2% X Connecticut Service X FTE X Average Salary
Plus all non-Connecticut service adds 1% per year.

Vested deferred retirement example:

Member A left teaching at age 47 with 18 years of full-time Connecticut service and 1.8 years of non-Connecticut service. The benefit available to this member upon the attainment of age 60 would be as follows:

2% X 18 years = 36.0%
plus 1% X 1.8 years = 1.8%
Total 37.8% of average salary.

If you would not have been credited with 20 years of Connecticut service by age 60, an early retirement factor will be applied to the calculation. Refer to the section marked Early Retirement for more information.

Vested deferred (early) retirement example:

Member B left teaching at age 55 with 10 years of full-time Connecticut teaching service. The benefit available to this member upon the attainment of age 60 would be as follows:

Age for completion of 20 CT years 65 minus age for benefits to begin at age 60 equals 5 years difference.  Early retirement % from Table A (5 years early) = 1.4%.

1.4% X 10 years = 14% of average salary.
