SOTS: Internship Opportunities

Internship Opportunities

The Office of the Secretary of the State continuously solicits applicants for internship opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students seeking an internship in the Fall or Spring Semesters or during the Summer months. Our mission is to provide students interested in the areas of law, government and business with a rewarding educational experience. Placements are unpaid but can be structured to meet course credit or field placement requirements.

The Secretary of the State of Connecticut is one of six elected constitutional officers in Connecticut and is responsible for overseeing a number of government functions through several divisions. The following is a synopsis of our divisions with possible internship opportunities:

The Administrative Division is housed in the Secretary’s Capitol office and at the 30 Trinity Street office.  It is responsible for issues and programs concerning legislation, press, special projects, community outreach, education and constituent services.

The Legislative and Elections Administration Division (LEAD) administers, interprets and implements laws governing all aspects of elections and voter registration.  This division also manages absentee ballot supply requests, trains individuals on voter registration drives, receives and maintains legislation, regulations and other executive branch records as required by statute, administers Connecticut's notary public program, and provides records management services to the office. This division is also the official keeper of all acts, orders, grants and resolutions of the General Assembly.

The Management and Support Services Division (MSS) supports the Office of the Secretary of the State of Connecticut in areas of human resources, affirmative action, fiscal administration, business, revenue depositing, purchasing and other support services. This division also distributes and is a sales agent for the Connecticut State Register and Manual and other agency publications. The Small and Minority Business Unit within MSS coordinates business development and community affairs including reviewing marketing data. It also arranges business showcases for small and minority businesses and conducts seminars and workshops for business owners and entrepreneurs.

The Commercial Recording Division (CRD) receives, approves, indexes and provides information about commercial transactions under the Uniform Commercial Code statutes and the formation of businesses. This division also fields questions on annual reports, filings of corporations, LLCs, Statutory Trusts, Limited Partnerships and more.
