Bill Tracking Report

Where did my bill go?

Any “proposed bills” that are not “drafted” or “reserved for subject matter public hearing” by the deadlines set will “die in committee”. The bill will go no further. Perhaps another bill exists that addresses the issue you are interested in. It is not unusual for “proposed bills” to not survive.  But sometimes the committee will “raise” a bill that addresses the matter. Committees can also keep a proposed bill alive by “reserving for subject matter public hearing”.

There is a lot of JARGON in the rules.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone or email if you have questions.  My email address is beth.leslie@ct.gov and my office phone is 860-297-4369 and my cell phone is 860-371-7614.

“P” before the “SB” or “HB” stands for Proposed. Proposed bills need to be “drafted by committee” and/or “reserved for subject matter hearing” by certain deadlines.

“C” before “SB” or “HB” stands for Committee. Proposed bills become committee bills once they are drafted by the committee.

“R” before “SB” or “HB” stands for Raised. Raised bills need a public hearing before the committee can vote on the bill. There is no deadline other than the final “JF Deadline”—this JF Deadline is the last day committees can act on bills in their possession.

Bills referred to committees after the “JF Deadline” have a whole different, and short, deadline for action.  More information on this will follow as committees hit their JF Deadline.
