OMA: Military support warms the heart

Military Support Warms the Heart

Letter to The Day
January 22, 2011

I am seven months pregnant and with all the snowstorms recently, most of the digging out fell to my husband. After being out in the freezing cold shoveling and snow blowing for nearly three hours he took a break, although he was not nearly finished.

When he went back out to complete the shoveling, a kind gentleman driving by with a plow stopped and asked my husband if he was military. My husband has served in the Navy for 15 years. After answering "yes" my husband was waved out of the way.

In two passes the front of our house was clear. My husband attempted to pay the man but he replied, "Thank you for your service" and drove away.

I have no idea how this man knew my husband was in the military; maybe the haircut gave it away. But his two minutes of kindness saved my husband another hour or so of backbreaking work (after having been away at sea) and allowed us to do something we rarely get to do: have a quiet, relaxing evening together.

It warmed my heart to know that there are people who recognize and value the sacrifices made by those who serve, and their families.
