Family Matters GAL-AMC Comprehensive Training
Connecticut Practice Book Sections 25-62 & 25-62A requires that any person appointed as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) or an Attorney for a Minor Child (AMC) in family matters must complete a State of Connecticut Family Matters Comprehensive Guardian ad Litem/Attorney for Minor Child training program. The training is presented by the Child & Custody Matters Work Group and co-sponsored by the Judicial Branch, Quinnipiac School of Law-Project on Children & Families and the Office of the Chief Public Defender (OCPD). Upon completion of the 6 class training program, you are issued a Certificate of Completion and your professional information is registered with the Judicial Branch for inclusion on the Judicial statewide list of individuals who are qualified to be appointed as a GAL or AMC in family matters for private pay cases. Inclusion on the private pay qualified list neither guarantees nor entitles an individual person to any appointment. Participants should consider this when making the commitment to the classes. Individuals who are personally engaged in active family court litigation are not eligible to register for the classes.
Individuals who wish to be considered by the court for appointment at state rates must be under a contract with the OCPD. OCPD contracts are awarded annually in July. Completing the GAL/AMC Family Matters Training and submitting an Assigned Counsel Application does not guarantee that you will be awarded a state rate GALAMC contract. Individual judges maintain the sole discretion to make the appointment of GALs and AMCs for indigent parties from the list of contracted attorneys.

Attendance at all of the classes is required in order to be included on the list of individuals who are eligible to be appointed as AMC or GAL in family matters. Participants are required to sign in and to stay for the entire class. Anyone missing one or two classes will be required to make those classes up. A participant missing more than two classes will be required to submit a new online registration request to attend the next session of trainings. Credit will be given for training days attended. Certificates of completion will not be awarded unless all six training days have been completed.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MAKE UP CLASSES
Seating for participants to attend make up classes is extremely limited. Please submit your request to attend make up sessions by sending an email to Frances.Wickstrom@jud.ct.gov
Because of the overwhelming response to this training program, the number of people who have completed it far exceeds the number of cases in need of a guardian ad litem appointment. Completion does not guarantee appointments. Completion is not a certification of expertise and those completing the program should not represent themselves as "certified" guardian ad litem.
