DSS: About the Medicare Savings Programs

About the Medicare Savings Programs

There are three Medicare Savings Programs (MSP) that help you pay for your Medicare Part B premiums. They are the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program (QMB), the Special Low Income Medicare Beneficiary program (SLMB) and the Additional Low Income Medicare Beneficiary program (ALMB).  Household income determines if the individual or couple qualifies for QMB, SLMB or ALMB. All three programs pay Medicare Part B premiums. However, only QMB pays Medicare co-pays and deductibles for Medicare-covered services. There are no departmental costs for applying or receiving benefits under these programs.

Income limits for the three levels of the program are:
  • QMB - $2,053.03 for a single person and $2,766.21 for a couple
  • SLMB - $2,247.63for a single person and $3,028.41 for a couple
  • ALMB - $2,393.58 for a single person and $3,225.06 for a couple

An individual who wants to enroll in the MSP needs to complete an application form W-1QMB “Medicare Savings Programs Application/Redetermination”  (Versión en Español.)
