Income Tax Payment Options/Payment Plans

  • Direct (Electronic) Payment if you file your return electronically:  If you Telefile or file online using the Taxpayer Service Center (TSC-IND) (our telephone and Internet based income tax filing systems), you can authorize DRS to transfer funds from your bank account (checking or savings) to a DRS account by entering your bank account number and your bank routing transit number. You can file your return early and schedule the transfer of the payment on or before the due date to ensure timely payment. Your bank account will be debited on the date you indicate.  If you owe a balance, you must pay the amount by the due date (April 15, 2009), to avoid penalty and interest.  You may also make estimated income tax payments or pay income tax bills electronically using the TSC-IND.

  • Direct (Electronic) Payment if you file a paper return:  If you file your return on paper and you want to pay electronically, you can choose Make a Bill Payment on the  left toolbar of the TSC-IND Menu.  You can authorize DRS to transfer funds from your bank account (checking or savings) to a DRS account by entering your bank account number and your bank routing transit number and designate the amount of payment and date of transfer.

  • Credit Card: You may pay your Connecticut income tax payment using your Discover®, MasterCard® , Visa, or American Express Card®.   A convenience fee of 2.49% of the amount you are charging to your card will be charged by the credit card service provider. You will be informed of the amount of the convenience fee during the telephone call and you may elect to cancel the transaction. 

    • Telephone Official Payments Corporation toll-free at 1-800-2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829) and follow the voice prompts. Have your credit card ready. You will be asked to enter your 4-digit jurisdiction code. The 4-digit code for Connecticut is 1777. Follow the voice prompts to complete the transaction. A convenience fee of 2.49% of the amount you are charging to your card will be charged by the credit card service provider. At the completion of the transaction you will be given a confirmation number for your records; or

    • Visit Official Payments Website. You will need to enter the Connecticut Jurisdiction Code: 1777. A convenience fee of 2.49% of the amount you are charging to your card will be charged by the credit card service provider. At the completion of the transaction you will be given a confirmation number for your records.Your payment will be effective on the date you make the charge. To be timely, you must initiate the credit card payment no later than the due date (April 15, 2009). 

  • To pay by mail:  Make your check or money order payable to the "Commissioner of Revenue Services." Mail the check with your return or with the payment coupon provided by DRS.

    • (OPTIONAL) To ensure proper posting of your payment write on the front of your check or money order:
      • the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number(s) and

      • "2008 Connecticut Income Tax"

      • Be sure to sign your check and paper clip it to the front of your return. Do not send cash. 

Remember:  To avoid penalty and interest, your balance must be paid on or before the due date of the return.  To be timely, the check must be received or must bear a U.S. postmark on or before that date.  For other timely mailing options see the Connecticut income tax instructions for mailing the return.  Any balance still outstanding as of April 15, 2008 is generally subject to 10% penalty.  Interest will also be assessed at the rate of 1% per month or fraction of a month until payment is made. 

  • To request an extension of time to pay:  If you cannot pay all that you owe by the due date and would like to request an extension of time to pay:

    1. File the return on time and pay as much as possible.
    2. If you are requesting an extension of time to pay the tax, complete Form CT-1127 and attach it to the front of the Connecticut income tax return. If the extension is granted and you pay all that is due by Oct. 15,  the 10% penalty will be waived. Interest at 1% per month or fraction of a month on the unpaid amount will apply.
    3. Do not wait for us to contact you about the extension request. You can begin making payments right away and continue making payments as often as you can. The interest charge will be less if you continue to reduce the balance due. 
    4. (OPTIONAL) To ensure proper posting of your payment, we suggest that you write the last four digits of your Social Security Number(s) and "2008 Connecticut Income Tax" on the front of your check or money order.

  • To Request a Short-Term Payment Plan: If you do not pay everything that you owe with your return, you will receive a bill for the balance due after April 15.  If you wish to request a payment plan, please review Answer ID 122, Request for a Payment Plan.
