DRS: Audit Internships

The mission of the Audit Division at the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services is: to ensure that all taxes due are reported accurately and are in compliance with Connecticut tax laws; to perform audit reviews in a consistent, efficient and cost effective manner, and; to provide courteous customer services which instills public confidence in the integrity and fairness of the division's audit and compliance programs.

 

The Audit Division has three subdivisions: Sales and Use Tax, Income Tax and Excise & Public Service Taxes - each focusing on auditing different types of taxes.  Currently the Agency has internship opportunities available in the Income Tax and Sales & Use Tax Subdivisions.  These are detailed below.

 

   
{Income Tax Subdivision}

The Income Tax Subdivision has four work units:

Business & Employment 
    Tax Audit
 (BETA)

 Corporation Tax Audit

 Income Tax Audit

 Collections Work Area

 

     BETA Unit Internship

 

Interns that work in the BETA Unit assist in the examination of financial records and of accounts of businesses and individual taxpayers to ensure compliance with Connecticut law.

 

This may include reviewing tax return information, researching Connecticut and federal statutes or regulations, the review and verification of financial records, and preparing audit work papers and narrative reports to support adjustments made.

 

Focus for these activities are in the Connecticut Personal Income Tax, Withholding Tax, and Sales and Use Tax areas; with exposure to various types of business entities:  Partnerships, Sub-Chapter S Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, and Sole Proprietors.

 

   

     Income Tax Audit Internship

 

 

Interns working in the Income Tax Audit Unit will assist in the examination of returns of individual taxpayers to ensure compliance with Connecticut tax law.

 

This may include reviewing tax return information, researching Connecticut and federal statutes or regulations, the review and verification of financial records, preparation of audit work papers and narrative reports to support adjustments made.

 

Focus for these activities is in the area of Connecticut Personal Income Tax.

 

 

 

{Sales Tax Subdivision}

The Sales & Use Tax Field Subdivision has four offices:

Bridgeport

 Hartford

 Norwich

 Waterbury

         

   

     Sales & Use Tax Internships

 

 

Interns will assist in the examination of financial records and accounts of businesses and of individual taxpayers to ensure compliance with Connecticut law.   These activities may include reviewing tax return information, researching Connecticut and federal statutes or regulations, the review and verification of financial records, and preparation of audit work papers and narrative reports to support adjustments made. 

 

Focus will be in the Sales & Use Tax area.  The intern will be exposed to audit procedures for a variety of industries and in various levels of complexity including: cash businesses, contractors, manufacturers and sole proprietorships.
