Hartford – With Spanish-speaking residents representing about 15% of Connecticut’s population and nearly 14,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in the state, Department of Revenue Services (DRS) Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan announced the creation of the agency’s first Spanish-language tutorial. The video demonstrates how to electronically file a Connecticut sales and use tax return.

The measure was applauded by Governor Dannel P. Malloy.

“This year, I established a Task Force to evaluate the state’s existing communications policies so that we are more effective at reaching people in every single one of our communities,” said Governor Malloy. “Spanish-speakers are an important part of our state’s growing economy and I am delighted that the Revenue Services Department is leading the way in the translation of critical information that will help business owners.”

Said Commissioner Sullivan, “Small business owners are just like every other business taxpayer in Connecticut. They cannot comply with state tax laws if they don’t understand what is expected of them.  We must be proactive in reaching out to taxpayers in a language they can understand.”

The electronic filing video is the first in what Commissioner Sullivan said he hopes will become a library of Spanish-language video tutorials.

Said Commissioner Sullivan, “Since becoming Commissioner, DRS has added the Google language translator to our website and started the process of identifying letters to translate into Spanish.

“We are the Department of Revenue Services. We are a service agency and our main goal must be to serve the taxpayers of Connecticut, not just collect their taxes.”
