DRS: Revenue Services Commissioner Praises Employee 2013 Charitable Giving

Revenue Services Commissioner Praises Employee 2013 Charitable Giving

For Immediate Release:
Monday, December 23, 2013

Hartford – Department of Revenue Services (DRS) Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan today commended agency employees for maintaining a strong culture of giving back to the community. DRS employees annually donate in excess of $100,000 in cash and goods to those in need.  These donations are in addition to more than $38,000 that DRS employees have pledged through the United Way’s Campaign for Charitable Giving.

Said Commissioner Sullivan, “I have no patience for those who bash state employees.  My experience, especially here at DRS, continues to show me that state employees are wonderfully generous and caring people. When disasters strike, our employees are quick to pitch in with agency-wide fundraising or collections to help the victims. Every year, Connecticut’s neediest residents are helped through agency coat collections, toy drives and adopt-a-family projects.  We may collect taxes, but we also have big hearts.”

This year, one employee even donated a kidney to save a life.  DRS Consumer Information Representative Sally McCartin learned that a friend she had not seen in years was on the waiting list for a kidney. Sally promptly got tested, learned she was a match, and set a date for the operation. She also became an advocate for organ donation.

Because Sally did not have enough sick time to cover the period she would be away from work, DRS employees took up a collection to help her family during her recovery.

Some of the groups that benefit from employee donations include:

  • Newtown Community Family Fund
  • American Heart Association
  • Victims of Hurricane Sandy
  • Camp Courant
  • American Cancer Society
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness
  • Relay for Life
  • Manes & Motion Freedom Ride
  • Komen Ride for the Cure
  • Take A Vet Fishing
  • Nurturing Families Network

Included are pictures of some of gifts, housewares, and more than 100 coats donated by DRS employees.
