Faster, Cheaper, Easier, Smarter: DRS Responds to State Business Demand For Electronic Tax Filing

For Immediate Release:                                                                                     Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Hartford – Responding to the demands of an increasingly paperless world, The Department of Revenue Services (DRS) is notifying business taxpayers that the state is moving to more tax filing and payment electronically in the New Year.

Said DRS Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan, “The business community has been asking for years that Connecticut move more quickly to electronic tax filing. The taxpayers want the ease and convenience of handling their state taxes electronically. Our on-line Taxpayer Service Center is ready for taxpayers and tax practitioners to file and pay more of Connecticut’s most basic taxes electronically. It’s free, accurate, secure and, best of all, easy to do.”

For tax periods that start on January 1, 2014, the following taxes must be filed and paid electronically:

·         Sales & Use Tax

·         Income Tax Withholding

·         Corporate Income Tax

·         Composite Income Tax

·         Business Use Tax

·         Room Occupancy Tax

·         Admissions & Dues Tax

Added Sullivan, “Electronic filing saves taxpayers time and money while reducing state costs. It also gives taxpayers the benefit of immediate confirmation that their returns have been filed and paid as well as a reliable record of the transaction.  Between now and January 1st, we will be reaching out to taxpayers, tax preparers and payroll processors to be sure that our roll-out of expanded electronic filing works smoothly.”

For small business owners who may not have access to a computer, sales and withholding taxes may be filed on line or by phone. DRS walk-in offices in Bridgeport, Hartford , and Waterbury also have kiosks where taxpayers can electronically file and pay taxes.

More information about electronic filing can be found at www.ct.gov/DRS/TSCFiling.
