Tax Commissioner Announces Extended Hours, Post Office Assistance For Filing Deadline

For Immediate Release:
Wednesday, April 10, 2002

Hartford – Tax Commissioner Gene Gavin today said that the Department of Revenue Services (DRS) will offer extended Taxpayer Services office and telephone hours to assist last minute filers. DRS will also be working with the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) on Tax Night at various post offices throughout the state.

“DRS realizes that a large number of taxpayers file their federal and state income tax returns within a few days of the April 15 deadline,” Commissioner Gavin said. “That is why we extend our Taxpayer Services hours to help last minute taxpayers. We want to ensure that taxpayers are able to meet the deadline and comply with the law.”

Taxpayers who need help filing their state income tax return over the weekend can visit DRS headquarters in Hartford on Saturday April 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. or call 1-800-382-9463 for assistance over the phone.

Commissioner Gavin said that for taxpayers who wait until April 15 to file their returns, DRS will offer extended Taxpayer Services hours at the Hartford office until 8 p.m. Also, DRS and IRS representatives again will be at four post offices throughout the state to offer assistance.

“I am pleased that we once again are able to work with the IRS to help taxpayers with a task that many find intimidating and confusing,” Commissioner Gavin said. “We want to make income tax filing as easy as possible. We are happy to make employees available to answer taxpayers questions and help reduce some of the stress they may experience during the filing season.”

DRS and IRS representatives will be at the following post offices from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. April 15:

  • 120 Middle Street, Bridgeport

  • 141 Weston Street, Hartford

  • 50 Brewery Street, New Haven

  • 135 Grand Street, Waterbury
