Bureau of Elevators

The Bureau of Elevators is responsible for certification and inspections of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks, private residence elevators, and tramways.

At present we have 15,400 elevators registered in Connecticut, all of which are inspected every 18 months. Our eleven inspectors, aside from inspecting elevators, are required to witness required tests by state licensed elevator contractors, and will investigate accidents and complaints.

Connecticut General Statutes:

  • Chapter 538, Section 29-191 through 29-199.
  • Regulation Sections 29-192-1d through 6d
  • Adoption of National Standards, ASME/ANSI A17.1 1996 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, with the 1997 and 1998 addenda, by reference.
  • Section 29-200, Regulations concerning certain lifts and elevators.
  • Section 29-201 through 29-214 Passenger Tramways.
