Intentional Injury

Interpersonal violence is defined by Krug et.al. as “The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivations.” (Krug,G, Dahlberg L, Mercy J, Zwi A, Lozano Generve R, eds. World Report on Violence and Health, Geneva: World Health Organization, 2002.)  Violence related deaths and injuries are described as intentional and include homicides, assaults, suicide, suicide attempts, domestic violence, child abuse and sexual violence. In Connecticut, suicide and homicide are leading causes of death for person ages one through 64 years of age.

The Injury Prevention Program works collaboratively with others working on intentional injury and related issues such as the Youth Suicide Advisory Board and the Child Maltreatment Domestic Violence Collaborative.  The Injury Prevention Program also facilitates the Interagency Suicide Prevention Network.

Violence

Youth violence prevention programs contracted by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) focus upon increasing knowledge and changing behaviors that are manageable within the limited scope and influence of the programs. Program goals include recognizing and dealing appropriately with anger, conflicts, peer-to-peer relationships; increasing knowledge regarding the impact of, and risk factors, for violent behavior; decreasing arguments and fighting and providing knowledge of appropriate resources for help.  Youth violence prevention programs focus on middle and high-school aged youth and are conducted primarily during out of school hours.

 Suicide Prevention

DPH suicide prevention activities include collaborative activities that focus on implementing parts of the Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Plan.  Suicide prevention programs, funded by DPH, focus on increasing information and awareness of suicide facts, suicide risk and protective factors and places to go for help.

INTERAGENCY SUICIDE PREVENTION NETWORK

The Interagency Suicide Prevention Network (ISPN) is a collaboration of representatives from state agencies and other agencies/ constituencies that was initiated as a result of the efforts of the Connecticut Department of  (DPH) Public Health- Injury Prevention Programs’ follow up to the Northeast Injury Prevention Network Invitational Suicide Prevention Planning Conference held in June of 2000.   In addition to the Department of Public Health, ISPN includes professionals from the State Departments of Children and Families, Judicial/ Court Support Services Division, Education, Social Services, Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Office of the Child Advocate. Additional partners include, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center – Adolescent Medicine, Wheeler Clinic, the Connecticut Police Academy (Police Officer Standards and Training),  Connecticut Council on Problem Gamling, United Way of Connecticut 211, and Yale Behavioral Health- Social Work.  Past participation included the Commission on Aging, Corrections, the Connecticut Mental Health Association, the Statewide Ethics Committee, state public safety/ employee assistance, a geriatrician and a counselor/social worker. The ISPN works closely with the Youth Suicide Advisory Board facilitated by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.

The DPH Injury Prevention Program facilitates the ISPN.

The ISPN completed the CT Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Plan (PDF, 642KB) in 2005.
