Quality in Health Care Program's Activity Reports

to the General Assembly:

 
As required by law, the Department of Public Health established a quality of care program to measure the clinical performance of health care facilities and to develop systems for sharing best practices.  The program is advised by a Quality of Health Care Advisory Committee.  The current report describes the activities of the quality of care program over the past year.

Adverse Events:

 

Hospitals and outpatient surgical facilities are required to report adverse events to the Department of Public Health using the National Quality Forum list of Serious Reportable Events in Healthcare, plus additional events as defined by the Department of Public Health.  Items on the list are of concern to both the public and healthcare professionals, are clearly identifiable and measurable, and are often preventable.

Hospital Performance Comparisons:

 

In 2002, the Connecticut State Legislature created a quality of care program within the Department of Public Health (DPH) as part of General Statute 19A-127 L-N.  This legislation requires all Connecticut adult acute-care hospitals to collect and report quality of care information to the DPH in order to produce a public report that compares all licensed hospitals in the state.

 
The Hospital Comparison Report provides comparisons of adult general acute-care hospitals on several measures.  Three common and costly medical conditions for which people go to the hospital are heart attack, heart failure, or pneumonia.  Hospital performance rates are provided for ten clinical measures that focus on treatments for these three conditions.
 

This report series is complete.  There will be no new comparison reports published.
