The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 01615, which carries Route 555 (West Main Street) over B&M Railroad, in the city of New Britain. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 7 p.m., in New Britain City Hall, Council Chambers, 27 West Main Street, New Britain.
The existing bridge, built in 1930, is a simple-span structure consisting of 2 steel through-girders along with concrete encased steel floor beams and a concrete deck. It is situated at the intersection with Burritt Street just west of the Route 72 overpass and carries one lane of traffic in both the eastbound and westbound directions. It has an overall length and width of 45 feet and 57 feet, respectively, and a curb-to-curb width of 39 feet.
The proposed project consists of the replacement of the deteriorated steel and concrete through-girder system with a new galvanized steel and concrete superstructure. The substructure consists of cut stone masonry abutments The abutments will be extended to receive the widened superstructure along with the associated work on the approaches and the Burritt Street intersection.
Work is anticipated to begin in summer 2014 and be completed in fall 2015. The rehabilitation of this bridge is to be undertaken with State Fix-it-First funds. The estimated construction cost for this project is $6,200,000.
The construction will be performed in multiple stages. In all but one stage, one lane in each direction will be maintained. In one stage both a local road detour and alternating one-way traffic controlled by temporary signal will be utilized. Based on the State highway boundary map, the width of the Route 555 right-of-way at the site is approximately 60 feet; therefore, impacts to private property consisting of partial takes and easements are anticipated.
The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project. The meeting facility is ADA accessible.
