Public Information Meeting, State Bridge Program Project Nos. 116-133 and 116-134 in Redding
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the replacement of Bridge No. 01018 and the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 02390 in the town of Redding (Town). The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., in the Redding Town Hall, 100 Hill Road, Redding, Connecticut. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2014
Bridge No. 01018 carries Route 53 (Redding Road) over the Saugatuck River just south of Umpawaug Road. The existing bridge was built in 1928, and is a two-span reinforced concrete superstructure supported by stone masonry abutments and a center pier. The bridge carries two 12 foot lanes of Route 53 traffic with narrow shoulders. The curb-to-curb width is 28 feet, which matches the approach roadway. The out-to-out deck width is 31 feet. The structure has no skew and an overall length of 37 feet with a maximum span of 16 feet. The proposed project consists of replacing the existing bridge with a 60 foot precast concrete box beam superstructure supported by integral abutments founded on steel piles. The bridge will be skewed in order to accommodate a more natural channel flow through the structure. A clear span was chosen because it improves the hydraulic capacity of the bridge. The new bridge width will accommodate a 12 foot lane and a 5 foot shoulder in each direction. Construction will require a one month detour and last approximately four months.
Bridge No. 02390 was built in 1928, and is a single span reinforced concrete slab superstructure carrying Route 53 over an unnamed brook a mile south of Bridge No. 01018. The curb-to-curb width is 28 feet, which is slightly wider than the approach roadway, and the out-to-out deck width is 30.5 feet. The structure is 21 feet long with no skew. The rehabilitation effort consists of increasing the superstructure width to accommodate a 12 foot travel lane and 4 foot shoulder in each direction. The existing abutments and wingwalls will be modified to accept the wider superstructure. No in-channel work is anticipated. Construction will be performed in two stages maintaining alternating one-way traffic controlled by temporary signalization and will last approximately four months.
Work on Bridge No. 02390 is anticipated to begin in spring 2015 at an estimated construction cost of $720,000. Construction of Bridge No. 01018 is planned for spring 2016 at an anticipated cost of $2,400,000. There are no rights-of-way involvement associated with either project.
