Public Information Meeting
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00732, which carries North Avenue over Route 15 (Merritt Parkway), in the town of Westport (Town). The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., in the Auditorium of the Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue, Westport, Connecticut. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2014.
The existing bridge was built in 1939, is a single-span reinforced concrete rigid frame structure. It is situated between Easton Road and Cross Highway on North Avenue and carries one lane of traffic in each direction. It has an overall length and width of 64 feet and 37 feet, respectively, and a curb-to-curb width of 26 feet. The bridge is a contributing structure to the Merritt Parkway Historic District.
The proposed project consists of the patching of the deteriorated surfaces of the historic concrete structure while replacing portions of the west facade due to the extent of the deterioration. All repairs will be performed in accordance with the Merritt Parkway Bridge Conservation and Restoration Plan, Bridge Restoration Guide (2002). In addition, the existing chain link fence added subsequent to the original construction will be replaced with a more architecturally compatible protective fence placed atop the parapet wall.
Work is anticipated to begin in spring 2015 and be completed in fall 2015. The rehabilitation of this bridge is to be undertaken utilizing 100 percent State funds. The estimated construction cost for this project is $2,600,000.
The construction will require North Avenue to be closed at the bridge site for the duration of summer school recess period between mid-June to mid-August. Traffic will be detoured utilizing Easton Road, Weston Road and Cross Highway. Based on the State Highway Boundary map, the width of the Route 15 right-of-way at the site is approximately 300 feet; therefore, no impacts to private property are anticipated.
The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for the publicís participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project. Plans will be available for public review.
Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project.
