Bridge No.00901, which carries Rt.67 & U.S. Rt.202 over the Housatonic River in New Milford

The Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00901, which carries Route 67 and U.S. Route 202 over the Housatonic River in the town of New Milford (Town). 


Project No. 95-254 involves the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00901, which is a single-span simply supported Pratt through-truss structure with a stringer floor system.  It was originally constructed in 1953 and was most recently rehabilitated in 2000 and strengthened in 2011.  The total structure length is approximately 332 feet.

The bridge is considered to be in poor condition due to extensive deterioration of the truss members, gusset plates, stringers, and floorbeams.  The proposed scope of the rehabilitation project includes: structural steel repairs of truss members, portals, gusset plates, stringers, and floorbeams; strengthening; localized painting at repaired locations; cleaning and painting of the bearings; patching of the concrete deck panels; installation of new expansion joints; upgraded bridge railing; and a deck overlay. 

Maintenance and protection of traffic is proposed to be accomplished using off-peak lane closures with alternating one-way traffic for the majority of the work, including the bridge rail replacement.  Alternating one-way traffic will be controlled by uniformed flaggers or police.  A full closure of the bridge during off-peak, overnight hours will be needed to perform milling and paving operations and to complete some steel repairs.

Barges are required to perform work over the waterway and will occupy a portion of the channel.  Proper lights and signs will be placed to notify boat traffic on the Housatonic River.

Environmental permitting will be required for this project; however, the anticipated environmental impacts will be temporary. Existing gas lines, electric conduit, and communication conduit attached to the bridge will be protected and remain in service during construction.  Right-of-way impacts include temporary construction easements.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2019, assuming availability of funding and receipt of any required environmental permits or right-of-way acquisitions.  The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $3.4 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80 percent Federal funds and 20 percent State funds.

The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for the publicís participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have prior to progressing the proposed project into the Final Design stage.

Plans will be available for public review. Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project. More detailed information is available at the Department's Office of Engineering, 2800 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, Connecticut, during office hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays.
