Bridge No. 00688 carrying Route 14 over Moosup River, in the town of Sterling

The Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the proposed replacement of Bridge No. 00688 carrying Route 14 over Moosup River, in the town of Sterling.

The purpose of the project is to replace the existing structure with a precast reinforced concrete rigid frame structure on pile-supported footings.  The new structure will also feature a 5-foot sidewalk along the north side of the bridge.  Bridge No. 00688 is a single 34-ft span, with a curb-to-curb roadway width of 37 ft.-4 in.  The structure was built in 1926 and carries one lane of traffic in each direction on Route 14 over Moosup River.  The estimated 2015 Average Daily Traffic (ADT) is approximately 2,100 vehicles, 4 percent of which is truck traffic.  A full structure replacement is required because it is hydraulically inadequate, scour critical, and the concrete-encased steel multi-beam superstructure is heavily deteriorated.  The superstructure is rated to be in poor condition.

There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements including temporary construction easements.

During construction alternating one-way traffic will be maintained utilizing a temporary signal.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2020 based on the availability of funding.  The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $2.6 million.  This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80 percent Federal Funds and 20 percent State funds.

The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project.
