Public Informational Meeting Ė Project No. 155-171,Safety and Operational Improvements on I-84

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Informational Meeting concerning the proposed Safety and Operational Improvements on I-84 on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Town Hall Auditorium, 50 South Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06107.  An open forum for individual discussions with Department officials will begin at
6:30 p.m., followed by a formal presentation at 7:00 p.m.


The project is identified as State Project No. 155-171.


The purpose of this project is to provide safety and operational improvements to address concerns with congestion and traffic operations on I-84 in the town of West Hartford.  It is proposed to address existing congestion concerns and projected traffic volumes on I-84 west bound by providing an additional through travel lane from the Park Road on-ramp to Exit 39A.  The fourth through travel lane will reduce congestion and crash frequencies between the closely spaced interchanges by improving weaving operations. To address congestion concerns, improve acceleration/deceleration lanes, and reduce crash frequencies on I-84 east bound, an auxiliary lane is proposed between Exit 40 and Exit 41.  I-84 will be widened toward the median to accommodate the west bound through travel lane and the east bound auxiliary lane.

Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project are not anticipated.


Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2019, based on the availability of funding.  The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $65 million.  It is currently proposed to fund this project with 100% percent State funds; however, the Department may utilize a combination of Federal and State monies to fund the construction phase.


The Public Informational Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project.


The meeting facility is ADA accessible.  Language assistance may be requested by contacting the Departmentís Office of Communications at (860) 594-3062 at least five (5) business days prior to the meeting. Persons with hearing and/or speech disabilities may dial 711 for Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS).  Language assistance is provided at no cost to the public and efforts will be made to respond to timely requests for assistance.


If postponement of the Public Informational Meeting is required due to inclement weather or other conditions, it will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the original hour and location.
