Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting
concerning the proposed replacement of Bridge No. 05587, S.R. 528 (Turnpike
Road) over Gillettes Brook in the town of Somers. An open forum for individual discussions with
Department officials will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a formal presentation
at 7:00 p.m.
The purpose of
the project is to replace the existing metal pipe arch with a proposed 30-foot
clear span three-sided rigid frame structure on pile-supported footings and
in-line reinforced concrete wingwalls. The existing metal pipe arch will be removed
and the embankments excavated to allow for installation of the steel piles and
bridge footings. Natural streambed
material will be placed within the channel and appropriately sloped to provide
an enhanced condition for wildlife passage. Turnpike Road, at the bridge location, will be
widened slightly to accommodate a 12-foot travel lane and 4-foot shoulder in
each direction. Bituminous concrete lip
curbing and metal beam rail with appropriate end treatments will line both
sides of the roadway, replacing the existing two-cable wooden post system. The roadway at the bridge location will
undergo full-depth reconstruction with milling and overlay of adjacent sections
to provide a smooth transition with the existing roadway. New pavement markings will be placed
throughout the project limits.
will be performed using a road closure at the bridge, and a detour route
directing traffic along state routes will be implemented. The detour will direct traffic from S.R. 528
(Turnpike Road) along Routes 190 and 83. The detour should only be in place for 4
months. Access to nearby residences and
driveways will be maintained at all times. Right-of-way impacts associated with
the proposed project are not anticipated.
Construction is anticipated to begin in
the spring of 2020 based on the availability of funding. The estimated construction cost for this
project is approximately $1.25 million.
