Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information
Meeting concerning the proposed preservation work on Bridge No. 02295, the
Stroffolino Movable Bridge carrying Route 136 over the Norwalk River in the
city of Norwalk (City). An open forum for individual discussions with
Department officials will follow the formal presentation.
The purpose of the project is primarily to address and repair elements
of the bridge superstructure and repave the deck surface, which were found to
be deficient during biennial bridge inspections that were conducted by the
Department. The proposed repairs are
intended to provide for continued satisfactory operation of the movable bridge
for an additional 10 years with only routine maintenance. The proposed work consists of the following:
Replacement of a thin epoxy overlay on the concrete filled grid movable
Milling, patching and repaving of the approach span decks
Replacement of the waste-line connection to the control house
Repair to the navigational fender system
Repair of the superstructure including precast concrete beam ends on the
approach spans and structural steel locations on the movable spans
Replacement of span lock assemblies on the movable spans
Repair to concrete piers and abutments
Mechanical and electrical system minor repairs
Construction will be performed by staging the work utilizing lane and
alternating sidewalk closures on the bridge.
A detour route will also be required for two 2-day closures of the
bridge to vehicular traffic for the installation of the proposed thin overlay
on the movable spans of the bridge. The
bridge sidewalk use will be maintained for pedestrians throughout construction
on at least one of the two sidewalks except for six anticipated closures of eight
hour durations, limited to Mondays through Wednesdays from the hours of 10:00
p.m. to 6:00 a.m., for the replacement of the span lock assemblies. All temporary street and sidewalk closures
will be coordinated with the city of Norwalk to avoid conflict with scheduled
