The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) is one of the leading transportation agencies in the nation.  We offer a variety of transportation career opportunities for entry level Maintainers in our Office of Maintenance & Highway Operations, which includes construction, maintenance and repair of State roadsides, roadways and bridges.

ConnDOT Maintainer 1 candidates are required to possess Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL) with the following coding: Class A or B with Endorsement N - Tank Vehicle.   Applicants must also have a current Medical Examiner's Card (MEC).
 
If you do not have an Endorsement: N - Tank Vehicle you can contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to take the test to obtain the proper licensing.  Applicants must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed.
 
A physical examination by a physician must be dated within the last two years, reported on an Examination to Determine Physical Condition  or a U.S. D.O.T. Medical Examiner's Physical Examination Form, which meets D.O.T. requirements in 49 CFR 391.41-391.49.

Connecticut Department of Transportation Maintainers are responsible for performing a full range of basic tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of State roadside, roadways, bridges, airports and other departmental facilities.  They also operate and maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment and/or acts as a helper on larger and more complex equipment.

Connecticut Department of Transportation Maintainer 1 candidates should have

  • knowledge of the physical properties of standard highway or airport construction and maintenance materials; some knowledge of some mechanical principles
  • some interpersonal skills
  • some oral and written communication skills
  • familiarity with the basic practices of the construction and maintenance trades
  • the ability to use and make minor repairs to small tools and the simpler mechanical equipment
  • the ability to operate equipment listed on the attached addendum
  • the ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
 
Candidates must have adequate strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. A physical and medical examination will also be required.
 

CTDOT Maintainer 1 candidates are exposed to

  • extremes of weather conditions
  • frequent lifting of heavy weights
  • highly dangerous road and traffic conditions
  • including exposure to heights when working on bridges
  • poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months
  • loud and potentially dangerous machinery.  

ConnDOT may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
