ConnDOT: Connecticut Parkways


Vehicles Prohibited from Connecticut Route 15 (Merritt and Wilbur Cross Parkway) between the New York State Line & I-91 in Meriden and State Route 796 (Milford Parkway)


New entry signing is scheduled to be installed along the Merritt Parkway portion of Connecticut Route 15 between Greenwich (New York State Line) to Stratford (Start of the Wilbur Cross portion of Connecticut Route 15). The following is an example of a new sign that will be installed:


With regards to the use of limited access State highways designated as a Parkway:

ALL VEHICLES WITH A HEIGHT EXCEEDING 8 FEET ARE PROHIBITED

ALL VEHICLES WITH A LENGTH EXCEEDING 24 FEET ARE PROHIBITED

ALL VEHICLES WITH A WIDTH EXCEEDING 7 FEET 6 INCHES (EXCLUDING MIRRORS) ARE PROHIBITED

This is not an all-inclusive list, but answers a majority of the questions this offices receives by phone and by email.
 
The following are common questions regarding the acceptance of driving certain vehicles on a limited access State highway designated as a Parkway (includes Merritt Parkway, Wilbur Cross Parkway, and Milford Parkway).

Is the following prohibited from the parkway? May Use Parkway / Prohibited Examples (including but not limited to)
Passenger Vehicles May use Parkways IF THEY DO NOT EXCEED ANY OF THE ABOVE HEIGHT, LENGTH, or WIDTH DIMENSIONAL RESTRICTIONS NOTED ABOVE.
Commercial Vehicles PROHIBITED
  • Vehicles bearing Commercial license plate
  • Trucks
  • Any vehicle with advertising, logos, etc.
Trucks PROHIBITED
  • Rental Trucks (U-Haul, Budget, Penske, etc.)
  • Tractor Trailers
  • Box Trucks
  • Commercial Buses
  • Combination Plated vehicles over 7,500 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
  • Recreational Vehicles
Trailers/Towing PROHIBITED
  • Utility Trailers
  • Car Trailers
  • Tow Trailers
  • Camper Trailers
  • Towing of another vehicle (excluding the removal of a vehicle disabled while travelling on a Parkway by a vehicle authorized to do so)
Buses PROHIBITED All buses, including commercial buses, bearing BUS license plate
School Buses May use Parkways Two-axle, four- wheel Type II School Buses (owned or under contract to a public, private, or religious school) are engaged in the transportation of school children to/from school activities
PROHIBITED All other school buses
Service Buses May use Parkways Services buses (owned or under contract to a public, private, or religious school) that do not exceed 10 feet in height and are engaged in the transportation of school children to/from school activities may use the Parkways
PROHIBITED
  • Vehicle exceeds 10 feet in height
  • Service bus not carrying school children
  • Adult special needs service buses
Funeral Processions PROHIBITED No funeral processions are permitted
Hearses May use Parkways When not travelling in a procession, however the hearse's vehicle dimensions should be reviewed prior to entry by the driver
